In Neil Mach's novel Moondog and the Scarce Vapour, Moondog decides to look into the claims of a no-nonsense teenage student named Ginika when she reports a ghostly encounter with her recently deceased professor.
 
In the interim, Zax Bamboula, a detective with the Defence Police, is tasked with capturing the Romani-born preternatural investigator.
 
Unaware he's on the defence Police 'Most Wanted' list, Moondog starts to investigate connections between the sudden death of Ginika's professor, the discovery of an amazing creature, and the murder of a transhuman named Blondoth.  
 
Before his untimely demise, did Ginika's professor discover the elusive "Scarce Vapour"?
 
Are these eerie occurrences in some way connected to dubious experiments being conducted at a neighbouring Defence Establishment?
