Litha is an ancient season of the year!
The season of Litha is associated with tranquillity & ease, because the mellow and graceful winds at this time of the year invite smooth sailing on gentle tides. It's a time to set-out on adventures!
However, Litha also brings Midsummer, the longest day of the year: which aligns with the Christian festivities of Saint John’s Eve and Saint John’s Day.
Litha is one of four solar holidays
Litha is a time to rejoice, to kindle fires, to sing at a campfire, and to play games. At Litha, summer reaches its full potential, with the hottest days of the year.
In the ancient Roman calendar, June held the position of the fourth month in a ten-month cycle, commencing with March. Therefore, Litha occurs during June.
Quintilis, originally referred to as the “fifth” month, was later renamed July as a tribute to Julius Caesar. The naming of the fourth Roman month may have been influenced by the goddess Juno, who is associated with marriage, fertility, family, and women.
The word “Juvenile” comes from the Latin root “iuvenis,” meaning “vital force,” which is why midsummer, June, the season of Litha, is associated with fertility & marriage.
