‘Rocking Surrey’ native Neil Mach enjoys bragging about being born in the same year as the opening of The 'Beatles' Cavern Club, the same year that Elvis rocked the Jailhouse, and the same year a fortuitous meeting took place between Lennon & McCartney at a church fete. This was the year that saw the release of the hit song Rock and Roll Music by the 'Father of Rock 'n' Roll' Chuck Berry (shown above) and so launched the Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll. Neil declares himself a 'rock and roll baby...'
During Neil's early school years, he received training in ballet, tap dance, and stage performance. He made regular appearances on stage and in numerous renowned musicals.
In the early years of the disco ‘revolution’, Neil established a disco with his friends from Surrey and their disco nights were a triumph!
Neil transitioned into rock writing after leaving a lengthy career in public service. He has since gained global reputation as a talented author/journalist and a popular public speaker.
Neil established the ‘Rock Pen’ school to mentor aspiring music writers and has contributed to numerous respected magazines, newsletters, and blogs for more than thirty years. Neil has attended countless music festivals and concerts, written thousands of reviews, and has interviewed many renowned figures across the music industry, often these have been 'famous names.'
In 2021, Neil curated a highly acclaimed exhibition on the ‘Coronation Charts’ — the pioneering charts of British popular music history — started during Queen Elizabeth II’s ascent to the throne. His exhibition was accompanied by an informative talk.
In the summer of 2024, Neil successfully curated a pop-up exhibition that highlighted the rock and pop sounds of 1969.

The author’s light-hearted & informative 45-60 minute illustrated talk, Rocking Surrey: A History of Suburban Rock and Roll, uncovers why the British County of Surrey became a hub for rock artists.
He offers an explanation for why so many gifted rock 'n' rollers emerged from the leafy suburbs...
For example, Surrey was the home and stomping ground to many of the world’s greatest musicians, from the stars of 'Golden Years' of rock 'n' roll, with the three greatest blues guitarists on the planet living a few miles apart and playing in the same band— from punk rock legends to progressive rock heroes, Surrey even gave 'nourishment' to the Beatles and the Stones!
Neil's talk will amaze audiences! They'll laugh and reminisce about the connections he uncovers!
Prepare to be amazed by Neil's personal history of popular music and be ready for unexpected revelations in his Rocking Surrey talk, A History of Suburban Rock and Roll.
The author will bring souvenirs & artefacts from the Golden Years of Rock to facilitate discussion and aid memory collection (see below.)
