Can you feel the breath in your nostril?

Can you hear yourself? Your heartbeat? Your breathing? Your stomach juices?

Close your eyes. Sense the breath. Shift your focus to your head, eyelids, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, chest, stomach, groin, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, feet, and finally, feel the ground through your heels and toes.

That, my friend, is intrinsic awareness. That’s your sense of identity. That’s the way to tap into a true self.

Meditation allows us to discover the sanctuary of peace within ourselves and reconnect with our inner being.

When we don’t meditate:

  • our behaviour becomes dictated by cravings and impulses

  • our minds make assumptions

  • our minds constantly shift from one thought to another

  • our minds are lured by artificially inflated or hyper-sexualized nonrealities, as we become influenced by flashy screen images or damaging words that trigger our insecurities

  • our body/mind will respond to external stimuli and fulfil cravings automatically

This is recipe for chaotic nonreality; And we have all become so used-to chaotic nonreality that we don’t think we can easily escape from it. But we can!

Here are five easy ways to connect with your inner self:

1: Remind yourself how pleased you are with your achievements today.

2: Show yourself kindness: cook your favourite meal, take a soothing bath, watch a cherished film, play a favourite piece of music. Do these things for yourself (not others).

3: Establish contact with a person you haven’t corresponded with in a while. It can be a text message or via a post on social media; it doesn’t have to be a call. Yet, try to make an attempt to connect with someone you have (unintentionally) ignored. (Don’t blame yourself for this; it’s living a hectic life that has caused your separation.) By connecting with this person, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment and nurture.

4: Once you’re done with your work and chores, and you have finished with your connection, avoid all activities that drain your energy or cause anxiety. For instance, refrain from phone checking, disregard emails, steer clear of social media, and avoid the news cycle.

5: Realize that hunger is a physical sensation, not a spiritual one. Provide your body with necessities, but also prioritize giving your spirit a moment of peace. Find a serene spot, shut out the noise, the worries, and the distractions: Try to block-out the world’s problems. Initially, attempt this simple meditation for just a few minutes, it may be challenging to begin with. In time, you’ll be able to lengthen the time you connect with yourself!
